Matt sighed and looked around the circle of couches thoughtfully. It had always been his greatest desire that if he could rearrange the charms room it would be couches and tables. He had always hated the desks and hard chairs and the distance he had been from the teacher. It was best, he thought, to learn in comfort. He leaned over and fluffed a particularly flat cushion on the nearest couch. So when he had acquired the job this had been his first thought, spending most of his budget on couches and transfiguring the Desks into portable writing boards.
So now the large room was decorated much like a book club would be, plush and fluffy couches of all kinds gathered around a space where Matt would teach. between each couch was a side table that was kept filled with treats. Tea was keep on the boil and ink pots set up to float at wrist level so the children could dip their quills.
Matt had even made the room big enough to house more students so he had decided to combine the houses together into one and then separate them into times. At least for now.
Matt glanced up, making sure the time was accurate before settling down at the front of the room in his big armchair.
The class room was ready.

When Peter exited the Gryffindor common room to go to his Charms class, the last thing he expected was to get so lost that he somehow found himself in the dungeons near the potions classroom. However, after asking a few older students, he was finally on his way.
He wasn't quite sure what to expect of Charms. He had seen Uncle Artie and Uncle Kilt-Crossdresser do some charms at home and he knew how cool they could be, but he wasn't quite sure what he was going to end up learning. Admittedly he was more excited by transfiguration and care of magical creatures, but that's not to say that charms couldn't be awesome.
Okay he was rambling now. How he could do that in his mind was a mystery to him.
Peter entered the room and took a good look at strangely arranged classroom. 'Huh, neat,' he thought. Peter greeted some of the other first years who were mulling around before sitting on a random couch, ready to learn some charms.

Valerie was milling around, looking for a familiar face. She spotted Peter and quickly moved to sit near him as the class started. "Hi" she whispered before pulling out a hard book, parchment, and a quill.

Matt looked out over the heads of the students who had come and smiled. It was always nice to see fresh faces full of excitement about learning. He noted faces he would have to recognize, and watched as the children settled in. When it was clear that all who could come had he stood.
"Good morning." He greeted smiling as if the only thing he wanted to be doing was teaching them.

Peter sighed as he looked at the things that Valerie had taken out. He reached for his own book, parchment and quill before leaning back into the comfy couch. He looked up expectantly to the Charms professor and replied enthusiastically, "Good Morning," as Professor Williams greeted the class.

Valerie parroted back the greeting with a soft smile, glancing around at the other students, then at the blond man in the front. She couldn't seem to look directly at him, so she settled on looking slightly to the side and watching the teacher in her periphery.

Matt smiled and began to walk around the room. He twitched his robe lightly and "Welcome to your first day of charms. I will not waste much time explaining what charms are, since, no doubt, you know charms from your day to day life. Charms are, in the simplest of terms, magic used to change an object." He paused letting those taking notes to finish their writing. He hoped someone would ask the obvious question.

Valerie paused. Change? Wasn't that transfiguration? She raised her hand. "Since transfiguration is changing the shape of objects... does that mean that Charms are part illusion part motion?"

Matt smiles lightly. "A Very good Guess my dear, five points for being willing to answer. You are half right, Charms can produce illusions and effect motion, but that is not all." He moves around the room. "A charm is a type of enchantment that causes an object to behave in a way that is not otherwise normal for that object. Actually to be honest the use of the word "Charm" has become a catch all for what is not Transfiguration I.e. changing the shape of a object. " He flicks a wand at Valerie's ribbon and instantly it becomes sentient and moves itself out of place to slither down her arm and curl up like a snake.
"Because of the subtly of most charms or the perceived uselessness of them, Charms are written off by those untrained in them as being nothing more than fluff in the education of wizards."
He summoned his tea with a muttered "Accio" making sure not to spill a drop. He calmly takes a sip before continuing.
" And, While I must concede that I, as a Charms Master, would find it difficult to turn you into a frog. " He pauses before a snicker child and frowns until he stops.
"I could just as easily make you THINK you are one. which, by the way if you ask Professor Jones, is much more embarrassing. "

Peter watched in awe as Professor Williams described Charms. He'd grown up in a wizarding family, so he knew the menial aspect of charms, but he didn't realize just how cool they could be. He turned towards Valerie and poked the charmed ribbon, just to see how it'd react, he pulled his finger back quickly as it appeared to hiss at him. He turned back to his parchment and took notes, notes that were unreadable to pretty much anyone except himself. Okay maybe this class WOULD be cool.
And he made a mental note to ask Professor Jones about frogs.

Valerie let out a soft "eep" as her frizzy mass of hair sprung loose like a bad afro. Quite a few of the strands sprung far enough foreword to block he ability to see, and she frantically tried to push it back to no avail. Why did it have to be HER ribbon that was made sentient?
And then the blasted thing hissed at her friend. She scowled at it. It seemed to look at her, become shamed, then apologetically touch Peter's hand before slithering up her arm to sit on her shoulder. She paused, then whispered to it, "My hair? Please?" It seemed to instantly understand and wrapped around her head, pulling all the longer strands tight. It even coiled around then until her normally untameable hair was a neat ponytail.
Smiling to herself, she began taking notes again.

Matt shifted in his chair. "There are much stronger charms than I have shown you, things that can harm and potential damage. As such you will learn only the basics this year, along with the imporatance of hand movement and pronunciation." He paused and his face grew hard. "We will also be learning the history of the use of charms. What history has wrought, good or bad, will teach us WHY charms must be used carefully. There are charms that used improperly can at worse reduce a person to a vegetable and and best have lingering side effects. For instance, In my second year a group of bullies ambushed me and cast a charm I was working on." Matt began to slowly fade out. "It was half finished and meant to help wizards who needed to work amongst Muggles. The ideawas to make it so they temporarily dissipated from the sight of those who saw them and if they saw fit, the memories." He was now completely see through the only hint he was there was a slight Distortion in the air in front of the fabric. "I had it all down except for how to change back to visible, I was stuck this way for a week, and had to learn to assert myself as being Matthew Williams. If I do not." he pops back into existence. "I fade out and people never know I am there. If I am tired, hurt or sick its harder and I run the risk of being completely wiped from space and time." He let this sink in.

Valerie gasped. Well, that certainly explained why she seemed to see him better out of the corner of her eyes. At the same time, though, she already had an instant liking for the kind man, an made a mental note to always ask about him until he was so much gone that she couldn't even remember being taught Charms by anyone her first year.

Peter looked absolutely amazed at his teacher's ability after the demonstration. He remained silent as he doodled a picture of his professor as a superhero, okay so charms were pretty cool, albeit a bit dangerous.

Matt waited until the others were done muttering and clapped his hands. "SO I told you all to bring in something for Class that was charmed, at least you think it was. Did anyone do this?"

Valerie muttered and ruffled through her bag. Finally, she managed to pull out a small medallion and raised her hand. "My parents made me wear this whenever I went out to explore the forests near our house. I believe it has a locater charm so that they could find me if I was late to dinner?"

Peter paled as Professor Williams reminded him of an assignment that Peter had honestly forgotten about. He pretended to be digging through his bookbag to get the object, but really he was just grasping at whatever he could find. Eventually he found something that MIGHT just work. Out came a singular Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Bean and he placed it on the table, they were charmed, right?
Oh god now he was hungry and the bean was starting to look appealing.

Matt smiled and nodded as he looked around. "Very Good Miss ... Valerie? A locating charm indeed. " He looked at peter. "And what is this?" He asked neutrally. Some of the other children snorted and giggled.

Peter blushed a little bit as Professor Williams confronted him. "Well, sir, it's a Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Bean." He sunk a little into the couch.

Valerie's eyes shifted to look at the embarrassed Peter. She turned to him and smiled, then looked up at professor Williams.
"He's right, they ARE charmed with their flavors." Her eyes slid half shut, and a smug smile creeped on her face. "And many people who grow up with them don't think of them as anything special. It'a quite clever and observerent that he realized that they'd work." It was quite clear that she was impressed with his quick thinking and covering for him, even though she felt Mattie would except it.
