Matt smiles "Very good. The ARE Bewitched but please don't speak out of turn Miss Valerie, or I will have to take points off. " His voice was gentle and kind but firm.
"Now Peter, you did indeed bring something bewitched , but my next question is WHY did you think it was enchanted? What about this bean makes you think so."

Peter looked momentarily relieved as Valerie defended him, but it washed away as Professor Williams turned back to him. "Well Professor, I was thinking that because Every Flavor Beans are so delicious they can't be anything BUT magical." Peter made a face. "Unless you get Brussels Sprouts or Earwax or something."

Valerie smiled softly, and gently took one of the cookies from the side table, chewing it thoughtfully. 'Muggles can't produce some of those flavors.' She thought happily, remembering Jelly Bellies fondly.

Matt chuckles. "Imaginative answer Peter, but not what I was looking for. Earlier I said that charms do what?" He was speaking softly, hoping that the other would come to the conclusion on his own and show those laughing at him he was clever.

Peter glanced down at his notes and back up at the expectant Professor Williams. "Well uh, the bean is bewitched to be a certain flavor. Because it's only part of the bean that's being changed and not the entire thing. If we were to change it to like...a bottle of paint or something then that'd be transfiguration...right?"

Valerie beamed at him and quickly hugged himbefore letting go and scribling down her notes. She just KNEW that Peter would be clever.

Matt smiled widely "Very good! Ten points to Gryffindor. Thank you for being so brave peter and answering my questions. Some of the others could learn from you." He turned back to the others and began to lecture quietly about the proper holding of the wand, and pronunciation.

Valerie shot a proud and admiring smile in Peter's direction before taking notes on Professor Williams' lecture. When she could, she briefly sketched out the holds that the professor deemed acceptable, when she noticed that the grip her mother preferred wasn't among them. She tilted her head, bit her lip, and decided to ask after class. Maybe different spells required different holds, but basic spells just needed the right mobility? As she pondered this, she kept chewing her lip, not noticing the damage being done.

Peter blushed as Valerie hugged up but his embarrassment was soon gone when he realized he just earned his house ten points. As Professor Williams continued his lecture, he started taking notes, complete with crude stick figure drawings and drawn out pronunciation tips.

Matthew continues stopping by Val to touch her. "Is something wrong my dear?" he asks.

She It took her a full ten seconds to realize his hand was on her shoulder. "Huh? Um... I was just thinking about holds. My moms holds her wand differently than any of the methods you showed. I was wondering if certain charms need certain holds to be cast, while simpler spells just require the right motion?" Valerie paused, then demonstrated how her Mother held her wand, the back end firmly tucked where her thumb and the rest of her hand met and the rest extending between her index and middle fingers. He ring and pinky curled into her palm.
"Or are there more ways to hold a wand beside the standard ones shown?"

Matt chuckles "There is not "right way" to hold a wand really. The ones I am showing you are simply the firmest and the ones that give you the most leeway for how off you can be. Your mother holds hers in a different way probably because that was the one she was brought up with. Its natural for her. " He turns to the others. "Remember all I teach you in this class is not unchanging. If you find a more comfortable way to hold your wand and it doesn't lessen your control I will allow it. I am laying the ground work, you must chose what to do with it. " He glances at the clock and sighs, considering his place in his lecture.. "I believe that is all I will teach for today. If you wish to talk to me about something I would be more than happy to do so if you stay behind. For now though, go out and enjoy the day. Next Week we began LEARNING charms, Please read up on the Alohomora charm and practice holding your wands. "

Peter looked at Valerie in concern as she bit her lip, but thankfully the professor intervened. He nodded thoughtfully as Professor Williams explained holds and he scribbled something on his notes before folding them up and placing them in his charms book as the class ended. He placed everything back into his bookbag and turned towards Valerie. "Hey Val, what do you have next?"

"Um...." Valerie shrugged. "Likely whatever you have. For as long as classes are required they're either not split at all - though only Mr. Williams seems to be capable of handling so many students - or split so that Gryffindors and Slytherins share classes." She had a far-away look in her eyes as she recalled that, then shrugged.

Peter moved from the couch before taking a look at the table he was just sitting at and quickly shoved the Every Flavor Bean he had found into his mouth. He swallowed it before waiting for Valerie to stand up herself. "Well, I've got a free period now." He paused and a mischievous smile overcame him. "Wanna go visit Professor Jones?"

Valerie twisted her face up and stared as Peter swallowed it. "And I though WOMEN were more likely to eat things that are unsani-" She cut the mumble off. "You totally missed the snacks on the end tables, didn't you?" She grabbed and bit into a cookie for emphasis. "Sure, why not."
