Al stood a ways from Mattie's office door in the empty classroom. He was thinking furiously, trying to find a way to tell Mattie that he knew without causing that damnable curse to strike out. A simple "I know" would confuse Mattie too much. Alluding to his status as Mattie's secret keeper might remind the Canadian of the confession...
Al shook his head. Fuck that. He'll just play it by ear.
He steeped through Mattie's doorway, relieved to see him there for once this week. "Thank God! I couldn't seem to catch you for the life of me this week. How are you?"

Matt looked up, and with a polite smile stood. "Hey Al." he greeted standing . "Sorry I have been pulling late nights lately so I tend to sleep between classes. " He walked over looking a little wobbly but somehow plumper. "What brings you here? Is something wrong?"

Al instinctively reached out to steady Matthew, his hand briefly catching the other's forearm in a very nearly romantic way. He let his hand drop away almost instantly. "Nothing wrong with me, except that I can't seem to ever catch you at a time we can talk since the... the potion incident."
Al's face turned pained and he scratched his head to hide it. "Guess I wanted to see how you're doing after that, and let you know that... well, I'm pretty sure I know why that happened 'n' all."

Matt blinked keeping his face blank. Yes don't let the other know you know what he is talking about. "Huh? Potion incident? Oh you mean when I got some bad pumpkin juice? Yeah.. But I figure that would be pretty obvious."

Al leaned back and gave Mattie a disappointed look. "Bad pumpkin juice my ass. I did a spell to see what was in it - and lo, behold, somehow an emotion-enhancing potion got into it. I wrote a note about it." The American sighed, then sat down.
"I'm not an idiot. I also know that you have to deny it, so, pfff, whatever. I just - I don't like seeing you hurting, and you DID tell me to take this book..." Al held up Paradise Lost. "It's still pretty obvious, considering I know what Jesse was." Oh, oops. Al wasn't supposed to remember his name...

Matt winced. "Al.. I don't know what you think you are doing but DON'T. Just don't. " He moved to sit behind his desk. "You don't know what you are playing with, you do not NEED to play with it. I am fine." He was struggling not to let the hope and happiness the other cared bubble up. He squished it down and sealed it away.

"Not while you're going through your own form of hell!" He sat up suddenly, looking straight into Mattie's eyes. "I'm not going to let the person closest to me - " he cut himself off.
"Mattie, I've always kept your secrets, but that time, you didn't know the full meaning of the one you told. Mattie, there's only two people who can help you out of this. I'm one of them, Arthur's the other. We figured out the first part and have the other three - Shit. Mattie, if I wasn't so terrified that your response will trigger that curse... I'd tell you how much you mean to me." Al slumped back down, drained. Change the subject...
"Arthur's been teaching you how to become and animagus, yeah? how's that going?"

Matt sighed. "Al." he muttered and looked down. He could feel the emotions jumping at the mention of how much he meant to the other. "If Arthur was teaching me to become an Animagus I would not tell you, its personal."
He needed to distance the other from him.
" As for any curse you think I have I don't. I just feel I should not get in the way of you all the time. You have Arthur, and I need to work. I don't need to be at your feet all the time " His voice was soft and emotionless knowing that lying was useless but having to.
"Thats all. I am not going through hell, I am just growing up Al."

Al was speechless, turning over Mattie's words in his head. He knew Mattie had to lie and deny, so he preened those out. Okay, so the first part was true, Mattie WOULD see that as personal with his native American training. Last part was an out right lie, along with saying he didn't have a curse...
The middle part though... Al's face screwed up in confusion. He had Arthur? What did that mean? Why was there honest emotion there? Whatever Mattie meant by that, he really believed it.
"Huh? I have Arthur?"

Matt nodded lightly. "Yes You have Arthur." He stood. "Al Its been nice talking to you but I must be going. " He glanced outside. He stands. "Please, don't worry about me okay?"

Al stood to, looking at Mattie, not moving to the door. "What do you meant by that? Geez, make it sound like I'm dating the Headmaster... You of all people should know that I don't date."

Matthew sighed, yes leave it to Al to be shy about his first boyfriend. "Whatever you say Al" he motioned out the door. "I am happy for you, for not dating I mean. Now come on, I need to leave soon."

Al was genuinely confused and showing it, but obediently backing towards the door. "One of these days, you're going to having to tell me where the hell you got the idea that I'm dating Arthur."

Al continued to stare at Mattie's door, then muttered, "It's like he did a 2+2 check and got a neg 50..." He shook his head, then left. "Oh well. I told him. If he's still in denial, it's his fault." He headed off to his quarters with a shrug.
