Country: Russia
Name: Ivan Braginski
Age: 17
Personality: While Ivan forever appears innocent and friendly, in actuality a large streak of childish cruelty dominates his existence. He usually has a friendly, shy sort of smile on his face, though this can often be more terrifying than if he looked angry or hostile. He is insane, after having seen many people killed right in front of him, though his parents have always been too busy to notice, so have never got him any professional help. He believes there is nothing wrong with the way he behaves, and very few people have been brave enough to point it out. He hates the cold, and would love to live in a very warm place in the south. He is very definitely evil, though not by design.
About the Country: Russia was created by the Swedish and the Slavs, and was originally called Kievan Rus'. It then expanded until it became Russia, and went through many hardships, a lot of them caused by the Russian Royal Family. For instance, Tsar Nicholas II sent thousands of people into a war that there was no chance of winning, and to compensate, invited everyone widowed to Moscow for a banquet, which caused rioting and mass hysteria.
Around this time, Lenin adapted the works of Karl Marx and preached Communism to the masses, leading to the Russian Revolution. Lenin ruled for a while and was succeeded by Stalin. At the beginning of WW2, Russia and Germany signed a non-aggression pact; they both knew neither of them would keep it, but it was an excuse to split up Poland between them, a secret deal in the pact. Germany was the first to violate it, and invaded Russia. Russia invaded back, and also invaded several other countries too, turning them into satellite states.
At the end of the war, Russia created an uncertainty about whether it had nuclear weapons or not, and despite signing an agreement to have no more wars, the Americans were suspicious, especially as Russian immigration to the US was particularly high at the time. McCarthyism began in the States, sort of like witch-hunts designed to find Communists or Communist sympathisers. Russians were only some of the large group of victims including Koreans, Chinese, and various other Asians. Russia responded to this by crusading against America and capitalism, and had a 'Russification' crusade: Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, Poles and the people of other satellite states were no longer allowed to speak their own language, only Russian. During this time, Russia sent many people to Siberian labour camps called Gulags.
Communism soon began to fail, and riots happened all over the country. The people were soon campaigning for change again. Mikhail Gorbachev was elected in the late 1980s, and decided to change the Communist regime. He granted independence to the satellite states and started trying to sort out Russia's problems.
This leads us to today, where Gorbachev's measures seem to have worked.
House: Slytherin
Year: Seventh
Blood Type: Pureblood
Best Class: Herbology (at home he is always trying to grow sunflowers~ Unfortunately, they usually die because of the cold)
Worst Class: Divination (Ivan finds it hard to clear his mind of the horrors from his past)
Anything Else?: Ivan used to attend The Durmstrang Institute, but he had to leave due to problems with some of the other students, so his parents sent him to Hogwarts instead. He paid a lot of money to have his lead pipe converted to that he could use it as a wand, but saves it for special occasions.
Writing Sample: Ivan was feeling rather overwhelmed. He was in an unfamiliar country, only speaking the language brokenly, at a new school full of unfamiliar students and teachers. At least the money was the same... It was strange. Whole new school, whole new rules. Whole new set of equipment. And all the books were in English. He sighed.
It was obvious he wasn't going to fit in here right from the start. That battered hat thing got confused and didn't know where to put him. It was about to say Hufflepuff, but then it shouted out “SLYTHERIN!” It had been able to see right into Ivan's head... It saw his deepest desires and his darkest dreams... Ivan did not like the idea that a hat knew all this about him. It scared him a little.
He buried his nose in his scarf as he walked along the corridors. Not his usual scarf. No, he hadn't even been allowed to wear that. This one had grey and green stripes. He did not like it. He missed his favourite scarf, the one his sister had given him. The one in his trunk in his dorm.
He shivered; it wasn't nearly as cold as he was used to back home, but the uniform was thin and useless at keeping out what chill there was...
It had been a bad idea leaving Russia in the first place. Ivan should have just stayed there, he decided. Why had he even come here? He was just about to go and write an owl to his parents telling them he was coming home, when he spotted a younger student crying on a bench. And... Oh... They looked so helpless... A smile spread across Ivan's face as he approached the other student. Maybe he would like it here after all...
(Hope this is okay
If I need to edit this app to fit in with Ukraine, that's fine, I can do that. I think if I'm half-siblings with Ukraine, that would work best? That way I won't have do do any re-jigging and we can both do this how we want.)
